People often ask us, how do you get those stripes in the lawn? To tell you the truth it’s not some big secret, in fact you could do it too if you want to give it a go.

How does it work?

Stripes are created by encouraging the pile to face in two different directions. Blades that face towards you look differently to those facing away, with ‘darker’ and ‘lighter’ colours created. This perception is simply down to light reflection.

Tools you will need:

  • A stiff push brush

Or if you’d prefer…

  • A power brush, for example a kombi engine with a bristle brush attachment.

The method:

  1. Start at one edge of your lawn and brush in a straight line towards the other end.
  2. When you get to the end, start the next stripe by brushing in the opposite direction to the stripe you have just created, and walking back towards the end from which you started.
  3. Alternate like this until the lawn is complete!

Extra little bits:

All grasses have a slight lean one way, in a similar way that natural grass bends towards the light. We always install our grass so that you are looking into the pile, as it has a darker, richer colour appearance. Looking into the pile is having the grass bend towards you -> \\\\\ rather than having the blades face away like this -> /////

Traditionally a striped lawn has ‘vertical’ stripes – so if you are looking out on your garden the stripes should appear vertical rather than horizontal.

You could also achieve the striped look by installing individual strips in opposite directions, but this would mean a lot of individually joined pieces and is quite a time consuming process.

It may sound obvious but…the wider the brush, the wider the stripe!

Stripes are possible with grass at whatever length but the longer the pile the more defined the stripe will be.

How often you will have to brush in the stripes really depends on how much you play on your Trulawn.
