3 Key things to remember about flowerbeds…
Is it an annual or a perennial?
Annuals go through their whole lifespan in one go, whereas perennials will return the next year round. If you get bored easily then replacing annuals each year can give your garden a new look, but if you don’t want to keep digging in and up every year then include some perennials. The best thing to do is have an even balance, replacing annuals when you need to.
What’s in the soil?
If you’re getting a fake lawn because the grass didn’t grow properly, then chances are that flowers will equally struggle to grow. It may be that you need to replace the soil for your beds with something appropriate for the plants you’ve chosen. Do a pH test to find out what your soil is made of, you might be surprised to find its made of stuff you can work with.
What about the sun?
There are plants that grow in the shade, and actually prefer it to bright sunshine. So if your garden doesn’t get much sun, look to fill your beds with shade dwellers or partial light lovers. Artificial grass will help with keeping the grass green in areas where it was once mossy, so that’s one less thing to think about! Ferns, geraneums, agapanthus are all good plants for sun challenged areas but ask your local garden centre or nursery for help in choosing the right ones.
