Did you know on average some parts of the UK can get over 4 metres of rain in a year? Oftentimes it can seem much more, and it’s one of the top reasons that a lawn can struggle to grow. People often find that artificial grass can make a big difference to a lawn that has drowned after lots of rain, or has become unmanageable with mud. If your lawn is having trouble coping with wet weather, Trulawn might be able to help…

Quality of soil…

To know how an artificial installation can help with rain issues it’s good to understand the quality of the soil you currently have in your garden. It can vary quite dramatically even within the same town and might be as much of a factor as the amount of rainfall you receive as to why your garden is looking a bit wet! If your soil is high in clay or if it has not been aerated then there are less pockets for the water to drain into: this causes water to sit on the surface. This surface level of water damages the roots of the grass causing it to die whilst also encouraging moss to grow and replace the grass. This can take a lot of effort to rectify. Aeration can be hard work if the ground is hard and re-seeding can be costly without the guarantee it will work.

Aggregate base…

As part of our installation process Trulawn remove the existing lawn to a depth of between 55 and 70mm then put in a sub base consisting of type 1 limestone as well as a layer of grano dust. Limestone is an extremely porous aggregate and grano dust is a fine grit which allows water to pass through the pockets of air between the particles. It also keeps the base stable and gives the grass a smooth finish. This is all topped by a permeable weed membrane which discourages weed growth. With these materials underneath the layer of grass, there is a stable draining system in place that will not slip.

Porous backing…

The rolls of grass also have holes along the backing which are concealed within the pile and are not visible from the grassy side. These allow the water to drain through the top surface and into the base below and prevent rainwater from pooling on the surface. Artificial grass tends to dry quite quickly because it is made of plastic. If you’re desperate to get outside, the time it takes for your lawn to be usable after a downpour is significantly reduced with artificial grass.

Trulawn can’t stop the rain but it can offer an alternative to a lawn that is struggling to revive itself after wet weather. If you’re tired of trying to save it from drowning or repairing the damage when it does, just get in contact. The team are happy to talk to you about installation and discuss whether artificial grass might be able to solve some of your lawn related problems!
