Installing artificial grass is usually a pretty smooth process when done by a professional, but there can be quite a lot of things to think about if you’re planning on doing it yourself. Before your buy any grass, or any other materials, here are a few little jobs that you can do to your garden to make it easier for yourself.

Cut back undesirables

One of the reasons to get artificial grass might be because you want a low maintenance garden. But if you want to save yourself time in the future then its a good idea to get rid of the plants and bushes you’re planning on grassing over before you measure up. This will give you a much better view of the levels in your garden so that you can judge how much digging out, or building up you may have to do in order to get the perfect lawn that you want. It also makes it much easier to measure the garden for widths and lengths when you’re not scrambling over bushes!

Decide on your hard landscaping

If your fake grass is part of an overall garden makeover then chances are you might be replacing or putting in new patio, paving or decking. If this is the case then you will really want to decide this first and have this installed before the grass. This is because the installation of these might affect the ground works of the area where you want to put new grass. If artificial grass is just one part of a big garden project take a look at our dream garden checklist for advice on how to carry it out.

Make sure your access points are clear

We’ve written about access points before but it’s worth mentioning again. You’ll be removing soil and transporting materials when you install the fake grass, so make sure your back doors, gates, or alleyways are clear before you start doing any heavy lifting. The last thing you want is to find out you can’t get through when you need to! Similarly if you need a skip to get rid of unwanted plants and soil, make sure there’s a space for it to be set down.
