There’s a reason they call the Autumn ‘Fall’ in the U.S, everything seems to drop off the trees and lose life right before your eyes! If you’ve got a Trulawn you’re not in danger of seeing your lawn lose colour, but it could do with a small hand when it comes to maintenance. In fact, your whole house could do with a little once over so there’s less work to do when the dreaded spring clean eventually comes around! We’ve come up with three essential outdoor chores to do before winter, to make sure your home and garden look their best before spring.

1. Dispose of leaves.

Leaves will be dropping and if you’re surrounded by trees this can leave your lawn under a blanket of red and brown. Leaving plant debris on a natural lawn can affect the drainage, also encourage moss to grow and leave you with wet soggy ground. Whilst an artificial lawn is hardy against the weather and degradation, an excess of decomposing natural matter can affect the drainage on a fake lawn too. It’s a good idea to sweep up plant matter rather then leaving them on the lawn until New Year so that your lawn stays tip top.

2. Clear your gutters.

Speaking of drainage, don’t forget to clear your gutters. It might not be a particularly glamorous job but it’s a necessary one. If you leave your gutters to get clogged, rain can come spilling over the sides or you end up with creatures great and small building their nests for winter. If the weather gets too cold and your gutters are blocked this can then freeze and expand, damaging their effectiveness. It’s a good idea to repeat this clearing again in spring, especially if you experience those notorious April showers.

3. Check your windows.

Whilst you’re outside, inspect your windows and door frames. As the weather begins to turn colder you’ll probably be turning the heating up and the last thing you want is to lose that heat through old, whistling windows. Energy bills are constantly a source of groaning, so try and fix them up with a bit of caulk or think about replacing them entirely. The sooner you do it, the sooner you can fix any problems and have a warm and toasty winter!
