By measuring your lawn we’ll be able to provide you with a DIY quote or provide a ballpark on an installation of the area.
There are few key things to keep in mind:
- Trulawn grass is sold in square metres (width x length = square metres) so measure your lawn in metres for the most accurate calculations.
- Trulawn grass is supplied in 2m or 4m as standard, with 5m widths available on certain grasses. If the width of your lawn exceeds 4m (or 5m) you will need to join more than one piece together.
- When measuring your lawn make sure to take the widest width and longest length of your lawn to ensure you have enough.
- Pile direction is important for best viewing of the grass. Always lay the grass so that the blades are bending slightly towards you, looking into the pile from your main viewing spot.
Measuring a square rectangular area
Measuring a square or rectangular shape will be easy. Take the measurement of the longest width and length and multiply it to get the total square metres.
In the example the area is 3m x 3.5m = 10.5 square metres.
A 4m roll 3.5m long will be required. Total 14sqm.
Measuring an uneven square or rectangular shape
If the basic shape of your lawn is a rectangle or square that has certain parts cut out – like a shed base or flower bed etc then you still measure it as the first example.
Multiply the longest length by the longest width to get the total area and then work out if you need a
4m roll or 2m roll.
In the example the total area is 6.2m x 3.8m = 23.56
A 4m roll will be required at 6.2 length. Total 24.8sqm
Measuring a round area
With a round garden it is possible to measure the area using a formula however for the purposes of artificial grass we need to measure the longest length by the longest width as there will be a lot of cutting needed to create the round shape.
In the example the total area is 3m x 3m = 9sqm.
A 4m roll 3m long will be required. Total 12sqm
Measuring an unusual shape or area requiring joins
There will be many gardens that are not covered in the above diagrams so the best place to start if your garden is an irregular shape would be to see if you can split the garden into sections – remembering that the grass comes in 2m and 4m rolls. Start by finding the longest length and width. Then if a section is over the 4m see if you can make this it’s own section. Like the diagram there will two sections:
1.9m x 4.2m (This will require a 2m roll by 4.2m)
3.1m x 3.8m (This will require a 4m roll by 3.1m)
Triangles / triangular shaped garden areas
Right-Angled Triangles
Take the vertical and horizontal lengths and multiply by each other then simply divide by 2.
If a triangle is om wide and 4m long it would be 24 sqm. Divided by 2 would be 12sqm.
Other triangle area
If your triangle isn’t right-angled you need to find the centre of your irregular triangle and cut it into two halves from the peak / point, straight down towards the long side, making two right-angled triangles. Now find the area for each one of the little triangles and add them together.
