“We moved into our house three years ago and having come from a house with a postage stamp-sized garden it was a novelty to have a big garden with a decent lawn. After a couple of months we realised we had completely underestimated how much gardening and maintenance would be involved just to keep the garden and lawn under control.
“All our garden plans which sounded great in theory were put to one side as weekends were spent entertaining the kids. Garden maintenance was kept to the bare minimum (i.e. mowing the lawn to prevent jungle-like conditions) and even this seemed to take forever. From a distance our grass looked quite nice, but close up it was a green, mossy mix up.
“Over the next year or so we spent less time in the garden. During the winter it was a no-go area and even in the spring and summer it wasn’t that inviting. The overbearing laurel intertwined with brambles would eat up any balls we kicked around with the kids and being out there just reminded us of all the work that needed to be done to get it back under control. Even my five year old son was reluctant to spend time in the garden playing. We had a lovely, big garden but on sunny days we’d rather go to the park than venture out into our overgrown forest.
“How did other families with well-tended gardens, lovely lawns and weed-free borders manage? The garden miracle we needed became apparent on one trip round to a friend’s house last summer for a barbecue. Our two boys are out there as soon as they wake up in the morning and again after school.
