It’s a warm summer’s day and you want to play a game in the garden. The kids suggest having a water fight, but the lawn is in such a state it’s sure to turn into a mud bath as soon as a hose is even mentioned. In fact, the garden is looking so bare and patchy, it’s not really much fun to play on at all come rain or shine. What can you do?

Have you heard about fake grass?

Natural lawns that are rarely aerated, mossy, or have a high clay content have trouble dealing with water and can turn muddy and messy with a bit of rain. Fake lawns are fast becoming the go-to solution for muddy or patchy lawns that prevent their owners from using their garden to their fullest. And for people whose lawns struggle to grow or cope with wet weather they can really make the difference.

How does a fake lawn work?

Artificial grass is a landscaping surface that is a great alternative to natural grass. It’s made of a durable plastic with small holes in the backing and is installed on top of a stable draining base of porous materials (type 1 limestone, a layer of grano dust, and a weed membrane) that allows water to pass through.

As it is made of plastic the grass won’t die with over watering. It also means that it won’t become muddy because there are no materials added to the top, and the sub-base is kept securely underneath the grass.

This is great news if you’ve had a patchy lawn for years, or if your grass has always been a bit soggy. But it also means you can play water based games that were once out of the question, all because the water won’t ruin the garden!

What about a paddling pool?

Now, it’s important to note here that whilst an artificial grass lawn won’t get muddy or die, a steady stream of water on top of the lawn may take a little longer to drain away than a bit of light rainfall. So think twice before upending a large paddling pool of water, as it will not soak through to the sub-base instantly.

Not everyone is a fan of water fights, but most like a lawn that won’t be trashed after a bit of rainfall!
