Now is the time when industry experts predict next year’s trends, and it’s the perfect opportunity to get inspiration for your garden project. Last year there was big emphasis on muted, earthy tones, sustainable living and edible gardening. But this year the main trend seems to be fun! We’ve pooled the best ideas from here and across the pond to find the five key trends for next year. Take a look at some of the latest ideas and see if you can envision any of these in your garden…

1. Chill out zones

Gardens are the place to hang out with an emphasis on ‘chat and chill’. Garden furniture that reflects this will be all the rage with comfy communal sofas taking the place of single chairs and tables.

2. Customization Lighting

Lighting is the big thing this year with many opportunities to personalise. Whether it’s by hanging lights in the style of a café or using coloured lights to enhance the colours around your garden, it’s all about making it your own.

3. Grow your own

A new generation of gardeners are blooming, born of the yuppie/hipster generation, and they value experience and tactility over cost and appearance. That means plants that have a purpose. Try out some fruit and veg gardening, but not necessarily in traditional plots. Mixed containers of edible and ornamental, as well as edible plants grown indoors are great for those with minimal space.

4. Fire Pits

Again emphasizing the importance of communal areas, fire pits, barbecue pits and outdoor cooking is also having a bit of a moment. There’s something for everyone in the oven department, with the Glee squad even highlighting a fire breathing dragon!

5. Key Colours

Muted, natural colours of 2015 are out and bold colours are in. Rather than paint your fence the same old brown, go for blue or purple. Find a key colour and absolutely run with it, but make sure this extends into the autumn/winter months. Gardens are not just for spring and summer!

If you want your key colour to be green, then the first place to look will be your lawn! If yours is plagued by discoloured doggy patches, has worn thin, or is frankly looking a bit dead, then artificial grass might be the answer. It stays green all year and can cope with all sorts of activity.
