Valentine’s Day is coming up, a time when couples across the UK remind each other of their love. Many head out to a favourite restaurant; some stay in and cuddle up with a bottle of bubbly and a movie; a lucky few take a romantic city break abroad to mark the occasion. But for some of us, these options can become a bit routine and we long to do something more out of the ordinary to celebrate our love.

At Trulawn, we’re pretty sure that it doesn’t occur to many couples to spend the evening outside – after all, February is hardly the warmest of months. But getting outdoors this Valentine’s Day could be just the tonic you need to make your celebration special. Here are some ideas:

Candlelight picnic

Who needs to eat at a fancy restaurant where dozens of other couples are staring longingly into each others’ eyes over their starters? It’s much more romantic to be alone together, and what better place to enjoy each other’s company than in your own back garden. Leave the kids with their grandparents and set up a picnic on your lawn with little outdoor lanterns, a rug to sit on and a blanket to keep you cosy. The food can be a simple or complex as you like and you can both enjoy a bottle of Prosecco since neither of you will need to drive.

Stargazing

This rather depends on a clear night, but stargazing is a great way to connect with your partner. There’s something about laying on the grass and looking up at the night sky that makes it easier to share our secrets, hopes and dreams. Take a flask of hot chocolate and take the time to talk about the things that you’re normally too busy to discuss.

Get active

If you’re not the kind of couple that is into romantic dates, why not simply use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to do something you both enjoy or to try something new. Go for a walk or bike ride, try dry slope skiing, play a round of golf, take a sailing lesson…the possibilities are endless. Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year, it’s the perfect way to get some quality time away from the stresses of daily life and recharge your batteries.

Have a garden party

Prefer to be surrounded by friends on Valentine’s Day? Hold a garden party and share the evening with lots of people you love to spend time with. Wrap up, get everyone to bring something for the table, serve mulled wine or simply provide plenty of tea and have a good catch up. You might even want to organise some outdoor games or get some music going for a spot of moonlight dancing. If you’re into themed parties, bake some heart shaped treats and get your guests to wear red, or to come dressed as famous fictional lovers: Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, John Smith and Pocahontas. The only limit here is your imagination.
