At Trulawn we love the idea of re-invention, we re-invent soggy, patchy, muddy lawns all the time! Fake grass is great for giving your garden a makeover, and re-inventing that lawn into something that looks great and is usable too! So here’s a few ideas about how you can re-invent some of your old stuff and give your garden character at the same time!

Old broken crockery mosaic designs

There’s an old gardening trick to use broken pots and plates as crock in the bottom of your potted plants. It’s supposed to stop compost clogging up holes and help drainage. But if all your pots are fine and full then why not use your broken plates for art? Spruce up and old table with a mosaic like the Ancient Greeks or Romans, decorate your plant pots, or create a feature wall in your garden!

Chest of drawer planter

If you’re thinking of getting rid of a chest of drawers, (perhaps a kid has outgrown them or they’re a little bit worse for wear) you can repurpose the drawers as a planter. Drill some holes in the bottom so there is a bit of drainage, and give it a lick of paint so it can cope with being outside and you have a quirky little box to grow things in.

Jam jar lanterns

It’s easy to make little lanterns out of empty jam or marmalade jars. Just take off the labels by soaking them in warm water, once they’re dry you can pop in a fairy light. It’s not wise to use any jars too small, otherwise the heat will warm the side of the glass.  Alternatively you can put battery operated fairy lights into the jars, or make small holes in the lids, pop the lights through and hang them in trees or in trellis. There’s lots of helpful guides online, so make sure you do you research first. Safety is always paramount, and anything involving a naked flame or heat should be kept well away from fake grass.

Wine bottle candlestick holder

This is an old classic you will have probably seen in a few pubs and restaurants. It’s great if you want to create an outdoor dining experience, bringing a little bit of rustic charm to any patio or table. Plus it gives you an excuse to drink more bottles of wine when the candles eventually burn down!

Plant your sprouting veg

If you’ve got a load of sprouting veg at the back of the fridge you can plant these and start yourself a mini veg garden (perhaps in your repurposed chest of drawer planter!). Food waste is a big problem in the world, with lots of uneaten fruit and veg ending up on landfill. If it’s past eating then see if you can plant it rather than chucking it in the bin.

Teacup birdfeeders

If you’re changing your crockery or have found some old teacups and saucers, instead of getting rid of them they can actually make quite charming bird feeders. If you can fix the cup on it’s side to the saucer then you have both a place for the seed to go as well as a lip for the bird to stand on. Hang them up in your trees or place them on tables and your garden can become a bird sanctuary.
