A staggering 1 in 5 people suffer from hayfever in the Summer in the UK with 95% of those sufferers allergic to grass pollen. Up to 15 million people in the UK are living with Eczema, which can also be due to grass pollen. With rising and lowering seasonal temperatures, the period for pollen is now much longer than it used to be, but there is a reduce in numbers for artificial grass allergies.

There are a number of ways you can reduce your symptoms including:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Stay inside and avoid grassy areas especially during morning and evening hours.
  • Don’t cut your grass when the pollen is high
  • Cut down on alcohol
  • Reduce your stress

Have you thought about fake grass?

If the thought of staying indoors all summer and Autumn doesn’t exactly fill you with glee then maybe fake grass could be beneficial to you. Of course, it can’t stop pollen from other gardens blowing in the wind, but it might make it easier to enjoy your own garden.

  • No pollen – it seems obvious but the grass is fake, so there is no pollen.
  • No mowing – some people find that cutting the grass can aggravate allergies and increase the drying of skin.
  • It’s easy to manage – you don’t have to do much to look after it, and it looks pretty perfect all year round. Stress can also aggravate your allergies so it’s good to have one less thing to worry about.

Who are the most affected?

Teenagers appear to be the most affected by hayfever and Eczema, consisting of 40% of the overall suffering population. During the summer months this can be particularly tough for teenagers as they deal with important exams, as well as being stuck inside during the summer holidays. In winter, people generally decide to wrap up, but airborne allergens (which can be grass pollen) can also affect and get into cracks in your skin.

It was recently reported that those who are born in the winter months are actually more susceptible to getting hayfever. Scientists aren’t sure why yet, but if you’re winter baby it might be the reason why you’re suffering.

More adults are becoming allergy sufferers later in life, so you have something to look forward to!

Of course there are other benefits to fake grass…

  • It’s great for pet owners who want a surface that won’t get muddy, and can withstand pet mess.
  • Means your lawn is usable Autumn/Winter and not just Spring/Summer.
  • If you don’t have much time, or are away a lot, it will always be tidy.
  • Eliminates having to mow or maintain tricky areas around decking, paving or other landscaping features.
  • Takes little maintenance – a sweep every now and again to get rid of leaves and brush up the pile.

Artificial grass can’t eradicate your allergies but it might offer a measure of respite for your garden. It’s a landscaping surface that has year round benefits and an investment that could change the way you use your garden.
