Here at Trulawn we love getting sent pictures of our customers’ brand new lawns so we thought we’d write a few pointers on how to take the best pictures without the use of a professional. Here are the four key areas to think about when getting out your camera:
- Lighting
When shooting outside the time of day makes a huge difference to the type of picture you’ll end up with. Professionals often choose shooting in the morning or evening because the light is warm, creates soft shadows and makes the pictures more dynamic. However it’s also important to make sure you can see whatever it is you’re shooting!
- Composition
Make sure you choose the right parts to include in your pictures. A helpful tip is to look at the corners of your picture before you snap it, that way you can make sure to exclude anything distracting that will draw the eye away from your central focus points. Another major aspect is to make sure your picture is level, is there equal amounts of ground on both sides? Are vertical lines straight? Whilst a jaunty angle can sometimes give photography character, often it’s confusing to the eye and bad for the neck! (For more guidance on composition look up the ‘rule of thirds’)
- Timing
Timing is one of the hardest things to get right in photography, especially if you’re shooting action. One click too late and you might have lost a picture for the ages! It can be difficult to know the right moment to shoot so it’s better to take more pictures than too few. Any rubbish ones you can always delete later and you won’t end up regret the ones you could have taken.
- Editing
This is the process of changing and manipulating elements like lighting, saturation and clarity after pictures have been taken. Computer programs like Photoshop, or apps like Instagram are common tools today and can improve pictures through subtle tweaks. Most camera phones have these features built in and can easily brighten or sharpen your images. We recommend using these sparingly as it is possible to distort and mangle your pictures out of all recognition!
