The trend for artificial grass is on the rise, and it can be difficult to know what’s what when it comes to the fake stuff. There are a few misconceptions about artificial grass floating around, so we thought we’d make it easy by debunking some of the most common fake grass myths…

“It’s only a sports thing…”

Whilst sports pitches probably get more press, artificial grass is installed in thousands of homes a year. Most artificial grass companies do a combination of different projects with domestic installations playing a vital part.

“They don’t drain water…”

Artificial lawns drain water very well, and is a common reason why people choose artificial grass in the first place. Our method involves layers of compacted aggregate to provide a stable draining base, whilst the grass has a porous backing to allow water through. If your soil is chalky, or hard from the shade, this can actually be a much better option for you.

“The grass is hard and scratchy…”

Once upon a time this was true, but artificial grass is now much closer to imitating real grass. It compacts under foot, is soft, and safe for kids and pets to roll around on. Generally the cheaper the grass, the lower the quality, so always bear that in mind when buying.

“It’s bad for the environment…”

There are actually some environmental pluses to installing artificial grass. It reduces water consumption, as well as stops the need for fertilisers and pesticides that can be harmful to humans, animals and the land. It eliminates the need to spend electricity cutting the grass and using petrol to transport those clippings to a landfill site.

“It’s really expensive…”

Expense is relative to how good a job you get, and really how much a job is worth to you in the long run. Installing artificial grass can seem pricey at first but it’s meant to last for at least ten years, with an expectation of fifteen. Quality products and installation by an experienced team make it worth it by how much use you get out of it, and what you save in the cost of maintenance both personal and financial.

“Pets don’t like it…”

Pets treat artificial grass like normal grass, only they can’t dig it up and it doesn’t go yellow when they do their business. For some pets, it’s actually better than the real thing. Imagine walking barefoot over a hard, thin, muddy ground or a soft, cushiony carpet? Which would you prefer?
