Bonfire Night can be a pretty exciting night to spend outdoors, but it’s also a night to keep a clear head especially if you’re planning on using sparklers, or if a neighbour is having a display. There are a few things you should remember to make sure you enjoy the whizz, bang and sparkle of Bonfire night.

1. Always have a bucket of water ready.

Sparklers can retain heat after they’ve burned down. Make sure you put them in bucket of water after you’re done with them. If you’ve got little kids, make sure they’re supervised and know what to do when the sparkler is finished. Sparklers shouldn’t be discarded on the ground, regardless of whether it’s real grass or fake.

2. There could be fireworks overhead.

If your neighbours are putting on a fireworks display, there’s a chance that some of those firework ends could end up in your garden. Be aware of what’s above you, what could end up on your lawn, and whether you need to take steps to prevent any damage. That bucket of water might come in handy again!

3. Don’t forget your furry friends!

Lots of pets can get scared on bonfire night, so make sure you keep them indoors with the TV or music switched on to muffle the noise. It’s all about making them feel safe. Also if you know of someone who is going to light a bonfire, ask them to check the area for any hedgehogs or small creatures who might have made the place a habitat before setting it alight.

4. Choose a safe area and make sure you know what you’re doing.

Lighting fireworks in your garden can be a tricky proposition, and dangerous if done incorrectly. Do not light fireworks anywhere near a fake lawn as the heat can damage the grass, just like if you were having a barbecue. If you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s better to seek out a local park display than host your own.

5. Wrap up warm!

It’s November so it’s going to be fairly cold in the evening. You can lose heat standing outside in the cold quite quickly so make sure you’re wearing a coat, and have hats and gloves ready.
