Wellchild is a UK charity that provides practical support for families of seriously ill children and young people. One of the projects it runs is the ‘Helping Hands’ project – which operates with the help of volunteers from local companies. The project undertakes vital home and garden transformations.

Families caring for a young person with specific and sometimes complex care needs have little or no time for maintaining a garden. Yet having a practical, outdoor space can provide a much needed play space for seriously ill children. This is where the Wellchild ‘Helping Hands’ project comes in to transform gardens into stimulating and safe environments.

Trulawn has worked with Wellchild for a number of years, providing artificial grass for some of their garden transformations. Fake grass is often specified as the surface of choice for a number of reasons including the fact that unlike real grass it is wheelchair friendly even in the winter and rainy weather.

Artificial grass is also a good solution for families with autistic children that have a tendency to put everything in the mouth. One recent transformation Trulawn provided grass for was Millie’s garden. Mille is severely autistic and loves being outdoors but has a tendency to eat things she finds in the garden. Unlike real grass, artificial grass is unpick- able so parents don’t have to worry about it ending up in the mouth. Also, being maintenance-free fake grass doesn’t impact on the parent’s time.
