Sometimes you can’t beat the real thing, but sometimes the fake stuff might actually be better! As it’s the festive season I thought we’d put the beloved Christmas Tree up for debate! Christmas trees are a key part of decorating, and for some people it might be the only decoration they put up! That means it’s got to be tip-top throughout the period. But which is better? Real or Fake?

Real Tree

Pros

Smell.

For some people the smell of a Christmas tree really brings the season to life. Companies try to recreate the smell in candles because it’s so popular!

Unique.

Each tree is unique. Some are skinny, some are fat, every single one is different. If you want your tree to be entirely personal then a real one won’t look like anyone else’s.

Authentic.

It’s the real deal!

Cons

Watering.

They do require watering. If the tree has been standing for a long time then the base might need cutting, with regular checks to make sure there is still water in the stand. Otherwise it will die early before Christmas is even over!

Needle drops!

This is biggest downside to having a real trees. They’re a pain to clear up and needles manage to get all over the house. Dry ones can become quite sharp which is a bit of a hazard for very small children.

Disposal.

When Christmas is over, you have to get rid of the tree. That might mean the tree stays on your front garden for the rest of January if you haven’t got time to go to the landfill.

Fake Tree

Pros

Reusable.

It’s a terrific way to save money. You can pack it away every Christmas and bring it out again next year!

No fuss/no mess.

It doesn’t need watering, it won’t drop any needles, it doesn’t need looking after! When there is a million and one things going on it’s good to know the tree will still look great whilst you’re running around getting presents!

Allergy free!

Some people are allergic to tree sap so a fake tree is a great alternative.

Perfection.

If you want your tree to look perfect, with symmetrical boughs and no gaps then a fake tree is better than a real one. The branches won’t droop with heavy ornaments and baubles so you can decorate it how you want.

Cons

Construction.

Most fake trees are pretty easy to assemble but some can be a bit complicated. And if it’s been in a box for a year then it might need a bit of spruce up of the ‘needles’.

Quality

The quality of your fake tree can really vary – a bit like artificial grass! – with more expensive ones generally having a better look and feel. But then again, the same can be true of a real one.

We conducted a twitter poll and found that only 40% of people have a real tree in their home! That means 60% had a fake one!
