We had an interesting interaction on our Facebook page recently with ‘Bob’, who has inspired this month’s top tip about the use of geotextile in artificial grass installation!

Having seen our video about our customer experience, in which there is footage of an installation taking place, ‘Bob’ wanted to know if we were using geotextile as a weed membrane. What he may not have noticed is that we actually use two geotextiles in our installations, and both are pretty important.

The first geotextile we use is for stability

It might be tempting to put aggregate straight on the excavated ground but this can cause problems in the future. Without a layer of geotextile, migration between the two layers is bound to happen. And if you’ve got aggregate migrating into earth then your lawn is not stable and sinkage can occur.

The second geotextile we use is for discouraging weed growth

This is to help from both sides of the installation. It is unlikely that a weed could grow through the bottom layer of geotextile, aggregate and sand but having another layer of geotextile helps prevent small plants from poking underneath the lawn.

On the surface of the lawn, small seeds or plants can start growing where there is moisture (which is present on most lawns). If you’ve got a barrier underneath the grass then it is unlikely that this plant can take root in the sand and grow larger.

Basically geotextile is like the bread in a tasty installation sandwich.

And you can’t beat a good sandwich!
