Every now and again people come to us, looking for artificial grass to be installed around their outdoor pool or sauna areas. If the pool is surrounded by concrete it can be a good way of softening up a hard area. If the pool is surrounded by grass, it’s a good way of keeping an even coverage around the edges (as well as no muddy feet!).

A couple of things to consider:

Where is it? Fully outside? Partially covered? Inside?

Will it be lay only or does it need a draining base?

If it needs a draining base – how will you ensure the safe installation of materials?

Case study:

This is a slightly different kind of installation because it involved wrapping the grass around the edge so that none of the lip was visible. On most pool installations you would meet the edge of the tiles around the pool rather than cover over the side and into the pool.

This is actually an outdoor pool in Frimley Green but it’s been built with an enclosure that you can draw apart. The surrounding area of 110m² first had Trulawn Supreme installed. That’s a 37mm grass which feels super lush under bare feet. As the area was cement, this was a lay only job.

As you can see Terry and Jack had to get in the pool to install the grass over the side and do the finishing touches (Jack looked a little bit unsure at first, might be because he forgot his swimming trunks!). Thankfully the pool was a warm 35°C which is why the pictures look a bit steamy, though with 4°C January weather outside they were glad there was a roof!

The team had to get specialist metal edging to go around the side of the pool in order to get a clean, smooth finish. It’s a little bit hard to tell but you can see how the grass fits completely the edge of the pool.

Afterwards the owners were gracious enough to give the team a bit of a splash around after all their hard work!
