If you want to know what it’s like to add grass to an area of existing artificial grass, or if you want to replace a piece that you’ve accidentally damaged then give this one a read so you know exactly what to expect. It’s certainly possible to add or replace grass, and you can still have a fab looking garden.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The additional/replacement grass will not be absolutely identical to the existing grass. Even if it is the same brand of grass it will be from a different batch and may have been produced years apart if your installation was a long time ago.
  • You may have to take up parts of the old grass in order for the old and new piece to meet. That means you should be careful when rolling it back in order not to damage the existing grass. (Or call in a professional like us to do it for you!)
  • Make sure the pile direction is facing the same way. It’s a simple thing but some people do forget!

Case study:

Let’s take a look at this installation in Southampton. Originally there was a hot tub occupying the big hole and it made perfect sense to have artificial grass around it. It didn’t get muddy with wet feet and it didn’t wear out with use. The original installation was done a few years ago by a landscaping company that used our Trulawn Supreme grass in the project. As artificial grass experts we were asked to put in the new piece of grass.

The grass had to be taken up in order to remove the hot tub, and you can see some of the aggregate base sub base below. Obviously this new area has to have some of the existing ground works and new ground prepared in order for the new grass to meet the old grass at the same level.

So the area has been filled in and had a weed membrane laid on top. The existing grass is rolled back into place so that the new piece can be jointed. It’s important to know that it won’t be quite the same as attaching two brand new pieces together as the older grass will be slightly more compacted than the new.

And here is the new piece fitted! You can see that there is a difference between the two grasses, but that is to be expected. It would be the same if you were attaching a new piece of carpet to the old one in your living room! Overall it’s a very neat job for what can be quite tricky to accomplish.

I hope this is helpful to you if you’re thinking of adding to your existing grass, and if you have somehow accidentally damaged your grass it is not the end of the world!
