Gardening can be a costly hobby. Here are some top tips for saving money as well as a fool-proof way to brag about being environmentally friendly.

Reuse old cans and boxes as planters. Recycling cans, tins and boxes is great for the environment and it means you can save money on buying costly pots or containers. Any old cans, boxes or tins you have lying around can be turned into perfect containers with a lick of paint and a little love. You can also find all sorts of vintage tins online for pennies, or plant flowers in your old welly boots and watering cans if you’re after something with a bit of character!

Plant herbs, don’t buy them. And what to plant in your brand new containers? How about starting your own herb garden? There’s nothing worse than buying a whole bag of fresh herbs for a recipe and only using a teaspoon. Rather than wasting money buying a bag of fresh herbs you never finish, plant your own herbs and save money on your cooking costs. Not to mention impressing your dinner guests.

Don’t throw away your old loo rolls. Ever feel like you’re drowning in empty toilet rolls? They’re great for germinating seeds and plants that need a little help, or protection from hard winds. You can encourage the plants to grow to a height and then the rolls rot away into the soil as if they never even existed.

But most importantly: plan your garden needs. If you want to change your garden write down what you want before you go shopping. Compare your list to how much space you have. Work around the seasons, buying plants that come in and out of season so your garden remains beautiful all year round.
