The common garden shed: what does yours look like? Neglected? A bit messy? Did you forget you even had one? As its National Shed Week in June it’s the perfect opportunity to give your shed a makeover and make sure your using it to its absolute maximum ability. We’ve got seven super simple ways of revitalising your shed, so that its not just an eyesore but a part of your garden, and an extension of your home!

Paint it

Your shed doesn’t have to be boring brown, there are plenty of other colours around these days. Painting it a bright colour will bring a smile to your face, as well as add a bit of interest for the winter months when the flowers have all gone.

Theme it

Your shed doesn’t have to be just for keeping your tools, it can be a little slice of the sea side, a wild west saloon bar, a craft room… Decorate it in your own personal style and make it your little escape from the world.

Light it

Adding some fairy lights is a good way of making sure you can use your shed when the sun starts going down. Hang them outside and give your garden more of a magical quality, or keep them inside to make a quirky little nook.

Carpet it

Give it a cosy feel by adding in a little bit of carpet to the floor. Its a good way to insulate the shed against cold, especially if you spend long hours tinkering away in there. Or if you’ve got some off cuts left over from your fake lawn installation there’s a good chance you can use them in here.

Blind it

If you want a little privacy, why not hang up some blinds or create yourself some curtains? It’s the way of turning that little extra bit of space into a private oasis for you to enjoy. And you can use the shed as a place to craft them!

Grow it

Turn your garden into a little nursery; its the perfect place to pot plants and get your seeds sprouting. Some people even go as far as to start growing plants on the roof! If you’ve got a flat shed, then why not? Eco sheds are all the rage these days – perhaps the roof would be a good place for some solar panels?

Or just…Knock it down and start again

Not happy with the shed you’ve got, but love the idea of having a shed? Why not start again? You could build a shed from scratch, or design and create your own. It doesn’t have to be the standard, it doesn’t even have to be made of wood. Take a look at the shed of the year entries to see just how different they can be.

And if you’re keeping valuable things inside your shed make sure you have a sturdy lock for the door, and that the walls and windows are in good condition. The last thing you want after creating your dream shed is to see it ruined by opportunistic thieves.
