It’s by no means a simple task for someone with no groundwork experience. There are a number of steps to ensure that your lawn is stable, secure and able to drain water effectively. We’ve got some of the main things to remember to make sure everything goes smoothly. The last thing you want is for your lawn to give you a fright every time you look at it!
5 things to remember when installing a fake lawn:
Laying the right way
If you’re joining two pieces together make absolutely sure that both pieces are laying in the same direction! Looking into the pile and looking against the pile will give slightly different colourings due to the reflection of light on the grass.
Joining just right
It’s absolutely vital you test the join before it is stuck to the jointing tape after you’ve trimmed the edges. Pulled too tight and the joint will look puckered, too loose and there will be a gap between the blades of grass. It’s especially important to check because the join will be affected by the density of the grass.
Weed membrane
It’s a simple thing to forget, but it can make a big difference to the quality of a lawn. A weed membrane will help prevent weeds from poking up under the lawn.
Secure edging
Edging is important to ensure that the grass remains secure and that the perimeter is to the right shape. We install edging of tanalised timber that is treated against rot, or in cases where you are up against paving or brick work, we also use cement to get a close finish. Small nails should be used that will be easily concealed within the grass, or strong adhesive where using cement. Dodgy edging will also affect the overall stability so it’s one to make sure you get right.
Take into account the camber
It’s easy to get carried away with excavating and installing sub-base but a natural lawn won’t be completely flat and you should try not to follow the camber of the ground unless requested otherwise. On the other hand, dips and mounds can be very noticeable so don’t get lazy with leveling off and compacting!
