Do I need underlay for artificial grass?
ANSWERYou may be wondering what goes under artificial grass when you’re not digging up the ground. In a case where you’re not excavating because you’re laying on top of an existing hard surface like decking, patio or paving you may like to use foam underlay under the grass.
Foam underlay offers a slight level of cushioning underfoot and protection for the backing against rubbing against the hard surface. Our 10mm foam underlay is perfect for this and is available in a roll just like our grass.
If your grass is surrounding play equipment then you may like a thicker foam underlay such as Shock Pad Underlay to meet critical fall height standards. At 20 or 25mm this is a lot thicker, denser and noticeable underfoot.
When laying artificial turf in place of existing turf, it is important to use a geotextile membrane in order to prevent weed growth. You can read a full method of what goes under artificial grass in our Artificial Grass Installation Guide.
