QUESTION

Can artificial grass be installed on any surface?

ANSWER

We can lay artificial grass onto most surfaces, regardless of whether your installation is a domestic garden or part of a corporate office. Turf, soil, concrete, tarmac, paving, and decking are all surfaces where you can re-surface with artificial turf.

If you have a balcony or roof terrace, artificial grass can be installed though you should always consider your access to the area. Artificial grass is provided in minimum roll width of 2m, so you may want to factor in manoeuvring the grass to the balcony or terrace as part of your project.

Areas do not have to be flat for artificial grass to be installed, areas with slopes can also be re-surfaced with fake turf. In some cases, slopes can be used to an advantage if you want to install a putting green.

A key consideration before choosing an installation of artificial turd is existing drainage of an area. Some surfaces like concrete have poor drainage and rely on evaporation so your grass may stay quite wet in this instance. The general rule is, if it drained well before it should drain okay with artificial grass on top though may take longer than before. However, if installing on top of wooden decking or balcony, prolonged wetness may impact the long time life of the decking so consider if your wood is in a suitable condition for the addition of grass.

If you’re curious how to lay synthetic turf on concrete, we typically recommend including a layer of foam underlay underneath the grass to provide additional softness and help even out the grass. This can be glued or pinned down depending on what is appropriate for your surface.
