You can lay fake grass almost anywhere, but the secret to making sure it looks good is in the installation.
Check out some of the most common places to lay fake grass with some of the key considerations to make before fixing it down. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how high quality the grass is, if it’s laid poorly then you’ll notice it.
Lay fake grass in place of natural
Artificial grass can solve a whole host of lawn problems and make taking care of your garden a lot easier!
If you have an existing area of grass then 9 times out of 10 you can lay artificial grass in its place. A really important factor to consider is how you prepare the ground before you do it.
We make sure to create a sub-base below the lawn that consists of limestone aggregate, granite dust topping off with a layer of weed membrane. This does three things;
- keeps the lawn stable
- helps drain water
- avoids weed growth
One thing to avoid is laying artificial grass directly onto topsoil. Without a proper installation base you’re far more likely to have water problems. This is because the earth below is less porous than the sub-base. Eventually you will end up with an uneven lawn, and your grass could end up loose in places. If you’re looking for your lawn to be low maintenance then you’re giving yourself potential problems later on.

Patio or paving
Laying artificial grass on patio or paving can completely transform a drab space into a wow space, instantly softening up a hard area for young children.
With patio or paving you can either replace entirely or lay directly on top. We recommend that you lay on top of stones or slabs that are in good condition. As you won’t be creating a sub-base you will need to rely on the fact that your slabs are stable to keep your lawn stable too!
Make sure to consider:
- are the stones cracked in any places?
- do they drain well to begin with?
If there are places where the grass is crumbling then it could be beneficial to replace the stone before fixing down your artificial grass.
If you want to soften the area even more you can add a layer of foam underlay or shock pad to sandwich between the paving and grass. This adds an extra bit of bounce to the area and helps even any natural inconsistencies in the stones.
Decking
Another surface which can be given an instant upgrade with fake grass is decking. If your current decking is looking a little tired then it’s ideal as a cover up!
Decking is similar to patio or paving in that you can lay directly on top without much trouble. Our adhesive is super strong which is great for keeping your grass secure. But it does mean that your decking will be marked if you ever want to remove it. So keep that mind if you change your mind a lot!
The best kind of decking to lay your grass on top of is composite. It’s more resistant to water than typical timber which is ideal for something out in the elements.
Other places to lay artificial grass…
You can lay artificial grass almost anywhere outside, as long as you can safely secure it and you’re happy with water drainage. Some people also use artificial grass for pool surrounds, on boats, on roofs and terraces or as part of entrance areas. Our grasses are designed to replicate the real thing and are intended for use outdoors, so that is something to remember if you’re intending to use
