What to look out for when choosing weed membrane
For a high quality and long lasting artificial lawn it’s important to choose the right weed membrane. There are some key factors to look out for when choosing weed membrane such as colour, permeability, manufacturing method and thickness which all play a part in distinguishing quality. Using the correct materials is essential for ensuring your lawn looks, works and can be used effectively over a long time period.
What is a weed membrane used for?
A primary purpose of weed membrane is to block the subbase from being exposed to sunlight. This helps prevent buried seeds or deeper-rooted weeds from growing underneath the lawn. You will find that most weed suppressing membranes are made of dark, blackout like material to help this and so that they are not confused with the white membranes that can be used underneath a subbase instead.

Why is a permeable weed membrane important?
When looking for a heavy duty weed membrane always remember to check whether it is permeable. If you have a thick membrane that is not permeable, water will not drain through your grass and sit on the surface of the lawn instead. Whilst artificial grass is plastic and therefore more durable than natural grass, sitting water can encourage bacteria growth so it’s always best to make sure there is nothing preventing water from passing from grass to sub-base.
What type of manufactured membrane is best?
It is recommended to use a spun bonded rather than a woven material as these have higher durability, water drainage and filtration. These spun bonded ground membranes are manufactured with compressed fibres that are fused together, meaning that they are often strong and lightweight for ease of installation.
Additional benefits to a weed suppressant
An additional benefit of an anti-weed membrane is as a protective layer between your grass and sub-base beneath. Whilst the sub-base materials are levelled with a whacker plate, as a fine granular material it still has the ability to cause friction with the grass on top. The textile fabric like weed membrane provides a bit of extra protection between your grass and subbase to help prolong lifespan of your lawn.
Checklist for choosing weed membrane
Make sure to look out for the following features when choosing your weed control membrane:
| Feature | Weed Membrane |
| Colour | Black or dark |
| Permeability | Yes |
| Manufacturing method | Spun bonded, non woven |
| Thickness | Lightweight |
It’s important to follow an artificial grass installation guide when fitting your artificial lawn so that you use the best methods and materials for creating a lawn that lasts. Laying weed membrane for an artificial grass project is a lot harder to add later on as you it requires unfixing and pulling back the lawn.
