We love it when our grass is installed in interesting places, especially ones with a scientific spin!

You can now find our Trulawn Continental grass inside the UK’s largest urban garden, the sort of place that may become the future of farming.

Urban farming or urban gardening is the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in or around a town or city. Urban agriculture is becoming increasing popular, with companies in the UK, and across the globe, using innovative new technologies to grow plants in unusual spaces.

The urban garden is located at the flagship headquarters of East End Foods, a Birmingham based food giant, who produce and sell a variety of Indian based foods across the UK. They chose to turn their three story lobby into an urban farm as part of a growing desire to see more vegetables and less meat consumed by the general population.

A variety of herbs and vegetables have been planted in the tower, with lettuce, coriander and spinach all growing well as part of the first batch. The crops are produced using a system of integrated trays which are placed under artificial lighting and rotated in order to ensure they are evenly exposed to the light.

The Trulawn grass installation was carried out by Always Green Lawns, based in Kidderminster. The East End Foods project posed a few challenges for the team – it’s not every day you’re installing up a three-story spiral stair case! But as you can see they did a top job, with the luxurious green grass complimenting the unique garden.

Artificial grass is a modern solution to tricky land problems, so it’s great to see it alongside a similarly modern solution to growing food in urban areas. Take a look at the local BBC Midlands report for more…
