April is national pet month so we thought we’d give you some of the most common questions we get about fake grass from pet owners…

Does it let liquid through?

Fake grass is manufactured with holes in the backing to allow water and other liquids to drain through. This is laid on top of a stable draining base of aggregate limestone and grano dust. This allows liquid to drain away from the surface so that you’re not left with standing puddles.

How do you clean it?

It is very easy to clean. Warm soapy water, and a rinse down with water does the trick. It’s made of a soft but durable plastic, so it won’t be affected by the process. In dry months, it can be worth giving an extra rinse when there’s no rain to help wash liquids away. If you’ve got a fair few pets using the grass it might be worth washing a bit more frequently.

Can it withstand pets and children?

Fake grass can withstand a lot of activity. And because it is fake means you won’t ever have to re-seed or water it from paws and claws and little feet running over it. It’s worth giving it a quick brush every now and again to encourage the pile to stay vertical.

Will they get dirty using it?

If your pet is the definition of ‘mucky pup’ you can also be assured that it won’t be bringing mud in the house. There are no materials added to the surface of the grass and the base stays securely below the grass, so if he’s got muddy paws he’s probably been in the flowerbeds!

Can my pets use it as toilet?

They certainly can. Fake grass won’t discolour from pet mess but it won’t make it magically disappear either! If you don’t want to step in pet mess when you use your lawn then you’ll have to pick it up! We recommend doing it fairly soon after they drop it, to save yourself the effort later and so you don’t get a build up that may affect your drainage.

My pet likes to dig holes, will it be able to stop him?

Fake grass is very durable, with a tough backing that is hard to claw through. It won’t stop your pet from behaving a certain way so if your pet likes to dig then it might be worth putting in a sand pit and hiding objects for him to find. Rather than rely on the grass being able to withstand his behaviour it might be that he needs another outlet for his natural instincts, or a bit of training.

Is there a special grass for pets?

All of our grasses are suitable for pets and most of our customers choose the one they like the look of best. We have added Trulawn Pooch to our range that is aimed with pets in mind. The one added recommendation we give would be to perhaps choose a grass with a shorter pile height simply for ease of cleaning.

We hope you find this information useful. A lot of our customers are pet owners looking for a surface that they and their pets can use and enjoy. If you think it might be something you’re interested in, then get in contact!
