Artificial Grass vs Outdoor Carpet – which is best?

What’s best when choosing between artificial grass and an outdoor carpet? When the weather is fine and you want to be able to enjoy your garden or outdoor space, you don’t want a reason stopping you from relaxing outside.

Depending on your lifestyle, you may find that one option is more suitable for you than another. Let’s explore the reasons why you might need one in the first place…

To avoid mud

The last thing you want when sitting down is to get mud on your clothes, especially if you’re wearing light clothing! With an active family and pets using the area, mud patches can easily become commonplace.

If you’re looking for a solution to a long-term problem, an artificial lawn will be much better than an outdoor rug. An artificial lawn solves this problem all year round, so you’ll never be caught out when you want to enjoy a moment.

If mud isn’t the problem, but the surface is still unsuitable you can easily lay an artificial grass carpet on top of concrete or paving. Artificial grass is designed to be soft like natural grass, so feels pleasant underfoot.

If you’re out on a day trip and only need a temporary solution, an outdoor rug may be lighter to carry.

Wiping up messes and spills

One of the great things about a lot of outside rugs is that they’re wipeable, so when you’re eating outside you can easily mop up any sauces or spills.  It’s important to check the materials of your rug as some will be easier to wipe than others.

Most of those wipeable rugs will be made from similar materials to an artificial lawn which is also easy to wipe or rinse. With the drainage holes in the backing of an synthetic grass carpet, you can spill liquids and rinse through easily without leaving a puddle providing a more waterproof outdoor carpet option. This may be more advantageous if you’re drinking outside and want to avoid staining an absorbent rug.

Big family or hosting others

If you’re a big family or like to host family and friends for barbecues or get togethers, you might need some extra surfacing for everyone to sit down comfortably.

The more people you have the more coverings you need! Perhaps a better solution would be to have an artificial lawn cover the whole area, or get a large piece of grass to roll out when needed..

Design or aesthetic

Whilst you can get a range of artificial grass colours in more than just green, it’s supposed to look as natural as possible. If your garden is heavily styled or following a specific aesthetic a patterned rug may be more in line with your surroundings.

However, if you want your garden carpet to look as natural as possible, realistic artificial grass is an easy alternative.

The verdict on outdoor carpet

If you have an outdoor space that is consistently muddy or hard, need something that won’t be damaged or affected by messes or spills, and want an option that accommodate large groups of people in one go then an artificial turf carpet is the option for you. If you just need something temporary, or in a specific design or pattern then an outside rug will do the trick. Just make sure to check the composition for durability against messes and spills.
