It’s National Gardening Week, and what better way to celebrate than some super easy tips for on gardening! You don’t have to be a pro to take advantage of these, in fact they’re perfect for beginners. If you don’t have the time to go to garden centres, and would like to save money at the same time, these might be useful for you…
Plant the food you don’t eat.
We’re guilty of wastage in the UK, with tonnes of food going in the bin rather than being eaten. If you’ve got a sprouting potato, or some fruit that’s gone a bit beyond, why not plant it? And you never know, you might end up with some nice home-grown vegetables to dig up and enjoy later.
Start off with some seeds.
It’s much cheaper to buy seeds than to fork out loads for plants and shrubs. If you don’t know much about gardening, seeds are a pretty low risk, low cost investment. It can be pretty satisfying to see them grow from shoot, but if you don’t have much success you won’t have wasted much money either.
Recycle small containers.
A good way to help your seedlings grow is to grow them in little seedling pots. Rather than going out and buying seed trays, you can re-use yoghurt pots, small trays, plastic bottles and egg cartons. You’ll save money, and feel proud of yourself too!
Plan any changes.
If you want to make changes to your garden it’s always a good idea to make plans beforehand. If every penny counts then you don’t want to waste them on plants that won’t grow in your soil!
Protect your plants.
Spreading Vaseline around the rim of a plant pot will deter slugs from getting at your precious plants. The usual method is to put copper banding around the pot, but that can be pretty expensive and tricky to source. Most people have a tub of vaseline lying around the house.
Gardens are a place to relax, enjoy yourself and spend quality time with the family, but they can take a lot of time and money to make perfect. I hope you find some of these tips helpful!
