With the cold weather setting in, many of us are lighting our fires and donning our chunky knits, but the arrival of winter needn’t mean being stuck indoors until the spring comes. In fact, there are lots of ways you can enjoy your garden during the colder months. Take a look at our suggestions below and prepare to make the most of the fresh air this winter.
1. Invest in bird feeders and a water bath
This is a reasonably cheap way to appreciate the wildlife in your garden, whatever the season. Watching the birds take a bath or venture down for some seeds or nuts is one of the simple pleasures of life, and a great way to enjoy the outdoors even from the comfort of the house.
2. Make a snow angel
It’s an oldie but a goodie. If you have kids, the snow is a great opportunity to get outside into the garden and have some fun. Snowmen and snow angels are a winter staple, and a great excuse to get away from the TV for a while.
3. Get some garden lanterns
Garden lanterns are a lovely way to add some warmth to those dark winter nights. Up-lighting a snow laden tree or placing small lanterns in the borders makes the garden seem a little more magical. They work especially well if you have a conservatory – evening guests will be able to admire your garden without having to brave to cold air.
4. Have a kick about
It’s never too cold to have a kick about with the kids. Children can get fidgety in the winter if they are unable to run off a bit of their energy, so popping outside to play with a ball or Frisbee is an excellent way to spend time with them and enjoy the garden at the same time. If you’re worried about your lawn suffering, an artificial lawn is a good option for minimising damage without having to reign in the kids’ fun.
5. Add a splash of colour
If you’re not a gardener, but you don’t like to see your garden looking gloomy during winter, why not buy some terracotta pots and fill them with winter flowers? Primulas, violas, winter-flowering pansies and forget-me-nots are all ideal for brightening the garden up in winter.
6. Bring the heat outdoors
Desperate for a little fresh air? Outdoor heaters are a perfect way to stay cosy while you enjoy your garden. Grab a cup of thick hot chocolate, turn the heater on, and sit and ruminate for a while in your natural surroundings. Its tonic for the soul!
7. Get snapping
Photography is a great way to enjoy your garden while keeping your mind off the cold. Frosty mornings provide a beautiful setting for some winter snaps, whether you’re taking pictures of the kids or capturing frost-decked trees or plants.
8. Get into the spirit of Advent
Who says Advent has to be about simple calendars and chocolate? Spice up the countdown to Christmas by creating an Advent scavenger hunt in the garden. Hide chocolate, sweets or small presents in the garden and let the kids look for it before school.
9. Have a firework party
Bonfire night and New Year are the best excuses to celebrate outside. Hold a firework party for your guests, with mulled wine or cider, hot dogs and a memorable firework display. If you do have an Trulawn – stick to some sparklers rather than fireworks so you don’t singe the lawn.
10. Take the dog out
If all else fails, you can rely on the family pooch to get you into the garden. Fido will have plenty of fun playing outdoors, so spending some time with him is sure to lift your spirits. Play a simple game of fetch, or if you’re feeling adventurous, set up an obstacle course for him – with plenty of doggy treats to reward his efforts, of course!
